Kosuke Fujishima was born July 7, 1964 in Chiba, Japan. His blood type B. After
graduating from high school, he got a job as editor for Puff a comics news magazine.
Rumors are that he was responsible for the parody comic called "X-pa no
Yoko-chan" that ran in Puff.
One of his jobs as an editor was to interview Tatsuya Egawa, who was runing his
"Be Free!" serial in Kodansha's Comic Morning magazine. After the interview,
Fujishima built up the courage to ask Egawa if he needed an assistant. Egawa examined
Fujishima's work and replied, "Sure!" Thus, Kousuke Fujishima explores the abyss
of a comic-artist nightmare.
Fujishima generally dates his debut as a professional comic-artist with the
publication of a comics-style report he did for Comic Morning on the making of the 1986
live-action, theatrical-movie version of "Be Free!"
The fans loved his work, and Morning recieved a fan letter raving about the
policewoman characters Fujishima has used in the Making of Be Free! report. He got
inspired by the letter and created his first series, You're Under Arrest!, which first
began in in 1986.
In 1988, Fujishima did a four-panel gag cartoon that featured the characters from
You're Under Arrest! praying to a goddess. It was a contest in which readers could win
various You're Under Arrest! presents, like T-shirts. In the cartoon, Miyuki and Natsumi
were asking the goddess to let them win the contest. Fujishiima was so pleased with the
way the goddess had turned out that she became the basis for Belldandy and inspired the
creation of the Oh My Goddess! series for Afternoon magazine.
By now you can see that Fujishima gets some of his ideas and storylines from
minor characters he creates for a totally different purpose.
Fujishima has a incredibly large amount of hobbies! Ranging from playing electric
guitar and with his new Mac, building plastic models and garage kits, and taking care of
his numerous tropical fish. He also owns, rides and repairs his seven (!!) motorcycles and
three cars. Fujishima really loves motorcycles and that's why he has motorcycles in
"You're Under Arrest" and why Keiichi is in the NIT Motorcycle club. Fujishima
listens to DMX; a digital, commercial-free radio service, while he works, and he likes
classic American rock such as Van Halen and Bon Jovi! He also likes Japanese idol singers,
in fact, there is a very convincing rumor that Keiichi's last name "Morisato"
comes from the name of the idol singer Moritaka Chisato!
Mr. Fujishima has also won a 1992 Tezuka Award for his previous work,
"You're Under Arrest". |
